The day I won lotto

Lotto - Our Urban Box

One of my favourite things to do in bed while I try to fall asleep is to dream up the many ways I would spend my lotto winnings if I won. It never changes, how I would spend it remain the same. The problem remains that I just never win enough to turn these thoughts into desirable actions. Surely it is my turn to win something life changing! No matter how hard I pray and cross my fingers and toes, its just not happening. And I am not hoping for millions and trillions, just a spare Mil to build the house and put some away for the kids. Thats all.

Herein lies the problem – I won the lotto once. My balls came up.

Lady Luck just aint going to let me win again. I was 23, living the life, credit card debt, no savings, living pay check to pay check as you do in your early 20’s.

I remember the day as if it was yesterday.

I was in my lunch break and thought I best check my ticket before I head back to work. It was a big $20 million game. You beauty. I had already spent at least a quarter of it.

I waited at the counter to be served. The man took my ticket and the machine beeped and flashed “congratulations you’ve won!!!”

Oh My God!! I thought I’ve hit the jackpot. You know how the little screen tells you the amount you’ve won? Well this screen didn’t. Obviously all the 0’s wouldn’t fit across the screen. And then..

wait for it…

The man pulled out the blue folder from underneath the counter. The blue folder!

Yes! I really did hit the jackpot!!!! I knew it. You know what the blue folder means don’t you? It’s the official “you’ve won so much money we have to send you a cheque” folder. And I was about to fill out the paperwork with my details!

You can imagine how freaking excited my 23 yr old self was. I was fist pumping… ok not really but I was busting to know how much I had won. Where was the confetti and balloons? Where was the sirens to alert all to my win??

“Congratulations, you’ve won $1234.and some random cents I can’t remember”

“Oh, my god really. $1000????”

“$1234 ma’am”

Dreams do come true! I was rich. I instantly thought of all the things I could buy with my winnings. Clothes, shoes, make-up – I was going to have it all!! I felt like a bloody millionaire.

I quickly filled out all my deets in my neatest hand writing, can’t have the lotto people sending my big cheque elsewhere now could I? I quickly raced back to work and phoned hubby to tell him my news. “I’ve won lotto” I yelled down the phone. His excitement disappeared when he learnt it was only $1234. Come on babe, it was a $1000 and thats a lot when you are 23 and in credit card debt!

I was on cloud 9. The bubble burst in 2 weeks when the cheque arrived and I acted like a mature responsible adult and put my winnings on my credit card and paid off that debt. So surely its my turn to win again?

Have you ever won lotto? How would you spend your winnings if you did win lotto?

I’ve never won anything – I don’t even buy a ticket lol, but I still imagine how I’ll spend my millions when I win!
All the usual stuff – new house with and extra bedroom so I don’t have to share my office with the guest room (and the chance to decorate the house it exactly how I want!!!), money for the kids, a really nice holiday on a tropical island, pay off all the debts and try to keep a good chunk to invest/save so we can retire at 50!

You have to buy a ticket on the big ones! I agree with all that. Retiring at 50 sounds great doesn’t it!

How exciting – that would make me so happy too! Like you and lots of other people I do dream of winning big so we could be mortgage-less and free of debt. You never know, you could win big again – some people seem to be naturally lucky and I have heard of winners who have won huge sums on multiple occasions. Although I would like a little share of the luck, just once!

I just want to win enough to be mortgage free and put a bit away for the kids. Being mortgage free would be life changing! I’ll keep buying tickets and hope that my numbers come up again!

I won $40 the other day which is probably my biggest win – I bought a new dress I had been eyeing off and new pjs. Woooahh big spender:) It felt good though to spend the money that wasn’t really mine! Was a great feeling :):)

No I have never won lotto, though my parents at separate times each won $10,000.
I worked with a girl who used to play the same numbers each week and one day she won $25,000. Her Hubby put those same numbers in that week too and together they won $50,000 and began a new life!

I haven’t but when hubby and I were dating we were apart (him in England and me in nyc) we were in our 20s. He called me from England and I heard all this excitement in the background. His parents had won lotto – not the biggest prize but the one below- the last number was off by 1 or 2 digits even if you can imagine as the numbers were being called out (they happened to be watching it on tv). They won about 4000 pounds I think (this was 20 years ago) instead of millions (I guess a lot of people win tier 2 lol). I imagine this is as close as we will get. They generous,y gave each of their three sons 1000 pounds so hubby flew over to nyc to visit me yay!

I actually have an unchecked ticket on the fridge from the Valentine’s Day Lotto (hubby’s gift to me lol) stay tuned xx

I haven’t won – although as the saying goes ‘you need to be in it to win it’… my entries are too spasmodic to bring any joy! Besides I think as regular players you and my Mum are in line for the big win before me…. however if I was to dream – a full time housekeeper and an unlimited supply of Business Class plane tickets would be on my list – see I do not deserve the loot – I should have been mature like you and said…school fees, savings, etc…Lol xx

I don’t play regularly just when it hits about 20 million. A housekeeper would be on my list and a gardener, personal trainer, and new car! I would also quit work and volunteer somewhere. Where’s the fun in school fee’s and savings? lol x

    February 24, 2015 at 12:00 pm

I never win anything, but I never buy lotto tickets, so I think that might have something to do with it….

When my sister was younger she was dating a boy whose family had won the lotto. Big time. Like a couple of million dollars or something like that. I remember him telling me how they all went on a holiday to Greece or something and when they came back the interest they earned in those couple of weeks from having a couple of million in the bank had paid for their holiday.

So now all I do is dream about having a couple of million dollars in the bank and just living off the interest.

I’m not greedy, enough to pay off my mortgage and buy a new car would be enough for me. Although more would be nice, it would give the girls their own bedroom, a second bathroom and maybe a holiday! One can dream….

I’d pay off the house and go on an overseas holiday but I wouldn’t want my life to change too much. I wouldn’t want everyone to know I’d won Lotto because I can imagine all the sudden requests for money you’d start receiving.

However, seeing as I hardly ever buy a ticket I’ll probably never win!

I once won $800 about 11 years ago! I even had to pick up my cheque from the lottery office – fancy! I kept myself calm and collected saying “It’s all good Jo, wont be long til you’re here for the BIG cheque and drinking champagne with the Lottery staff” 😉 I’d just bought a new unit, so spent it on nice housy stuff. My cousins wife won $250K before she met him so that’s set them up well in life. My BFF husband won $100K on a scratchie but we NEVER speak about it! So weird!!! I totally believe I will win the big one one-day, girls gotta dream! xx

Hahahha this post. I have never won the lotto but I should start trying as I swear I have a lucky charm. When I was going to college in the States I entered a salsa (the yummy stuff you eat) competition. There was some legitimate contestants like authentic mexicans and I WON! Also, when we where on our honeymoon in Bali they had a guess the kilos of big watermelon and I WON! My husband entered the Morning Shows giveaway when it reach 100k and we didnt win but I teased him and said it was because he entered not me. However, I still ask the question what I would do if I hit the jackpot. Buy a home for my whole family and have lots of dogs 🙂
