The day I won lotto
One of my favourite things to do in bed while I try to fall asleep is to dream up the many ways I would spend my lotto winnings if I won. It never changes, how I would spend it remain the same. The problem remains that I just never win enough to turn these thoughts into desirable actions. Surely it is my turn to win something life changing! No matter how hard I pray and cross my fingers and toes, its just not happening. And I am not hoping for millions and trillions, just a spare Mil to build the house and put some away for the kids. Thats all.
Herein lies the problem – I won the lotto once. My balls came up.
Lady Luck just aint going to let me win again. I was 23, living the life, credit card debt, no savings, living pay check to pay check as you do in your early 20’s.
I remember the day as if it was yesterday.
I was in my lunch break and thought I best check my ticket before I head back to work. It was a big $20 million game. You beauty. I had already spent at least a quarter of it.
I waited at the counter to be served. The man took my ticket and the machine beeped and flashed “congratulations you’ve won!!!”
Oh My God!! I thought I’ve hit the jackpot. You know how the little screen tells you the amount you’ve won? Well this screen didn’t. Obviously all the 0’s wouldn’t fit across the screen. And then..
wait for it…
The man pulled out the blue folder from underneath the counter. The blue folder!
Yes! I really did hit the jackpot!!!! I knew it. You know what the blue folder means don’t you? It’s the official “you’ve won so much money we have to send you a cheque” folder. And I was about to fill out the paperwork with my details!
You can imagine how freaking excited my 23 yr old self was. I was fist pumping… ok not really but I was busting to know how much I had won. Where was the confetti and balloons? Where was the sirens to alert all to my win??
“Congratulations, you’ve won $1234.and some random cents I can’t remember”
“Oh, my god really. $1000????”
Dreams do come true! I was rich. I instantly thought of all the things I could buy with my winnings. Clothes, shoes, make-up – I was going to have it all!! I felt like a bloody millionaire.
I quickly filled out all my deets in my neatest hand writing, can’t have the lotto people sending my big cheque elsewhere now could I? I quickly raced back to work and phoned hubby to tell him my news. “I’ve won lotto” I yelled down the phone. His excitement disappeared when he learnt it was only $1234. Come on babe, it was a $1000 and thats a lot when you are 23 and in credit card debt!
I was on cloud 9. The bubble burst in 2 weeks when the cheque arrived and I acted like a mature responsible adult and put my winnings on my credit card and paid off that debt. So surely its my turn to win again?
Have you ever won lotto? How would you spend your winnings if you did win lotto?
