Our Urban Box

I love a good kitchen renovation! So today for my #oubstyle feature I have Shannon from Forty-Up, sharing her kitchen reno with us. Shannon is a friend of mine I met through a online blogging course. Shannon is a fashion and lifestyle blogger who also writes about her beautiful family and her travel adventures. Together these stories weave together into a mood board to show you how to make your dreams a reality.

Lets get into this kitchen reno!

Thanks for sharing your kitchen reno with us Shannon. I’m delighted to have you here. Tell us a bit about yourself and your home.

Thank you so much for having me!  I’m a OUB fan!  I’m Shannon, I write a little blog called Forty Up which is a bit of a mash up of all things beautiful & inspiring to enhance your own style.  I am married to the wonderful Mr D & have 2 children, my daughter Oakley is 8 & my son Doyle is nearly 5.

My home is in a coastal Northern suburb of Perth, W.A.  We’ve lived here for about 3 years & have been renovating steadily since even before we moved in!

Our home was built in 1947 & has only had one owner prior to us, which makes its history & feel very important to us.  It was well out of our price range but we made an offer, up against a developer who wanted to knock it down & subdivide & offered A LOT more than us, but the owner of the property wanted a family to move in & love the house as much as they had, so we got it!

When we moved in, the previous, now very elderly owners left us a bunch of flowers, some champers & photos of them clearing the block & the building the home over the years.  Very special!

We love the whole vintage vibe so we try to mesh current looks while staying true to the original aesthetic of the home.

That is so sweet of the previous owners to do that! Lets talk about the inspiration behind your kitchen design.

More space is the practical answer.  The home was quite pokey, the kitchen separate to the dining & lounge, we just didn’t have the space & with a growing family needed to have room to all be able to interact in the kitchen.   We ended up knocking down the wall between the kitchen & dining to allow this to happen.  Aesthetically, we have a favourite artwork in our dining area which we used as our colour scheme & design inspiration “Totem” by Lisa Lapointe.

Great colour choices! I love how you have used two colours for your cabinetry & I adore your bench top! Can you share with us the name of the bench tops and cupboards?

The benchtop is Bianco Carrara by QStone & the cupboards are by Laminex, Pearl Grey & Oyster White

What is your favourite part of the kitchen?

The big long centre bench!  Not only does it have heaps of storage, my kids eat breakfast there, do homework there, lunchboxes packed, it’s really made the kitchen the heart of our home.  It’s also perfect for Friday afternoon drinks & nibbles!

Is there anything your not happy with or had to compromise on?

To be honest, I compromised on the splashback tiles.  I wanted either a geometric tile or a herringbone pattern.  Mr D flatly refused anything geometric claiming it gave him a headache!  And the herringbone when quoted was too expensive & too complicated for the space.  So, we compromised on the subway tile, but I got my black, & they are a little bit different, not your traditional flat subway tile.  But I love them now, they were a great choice.

I love the black tap – I am going to use one in my kitchen too. I am also considering a matte black sink – did you think about using one?

We chose the black tap simply because we couldn’t find a mixer we liked, that matched the metal of the sink.  We had already decided on the black tile so thought the black tap might work against that, & it did!  It was risky but it paid off.  We did look at the matching black sinks, they are amazing, but it came down to budget & we wanted to keep with the feel of the house & felt sticking to good old “retro” steel would suit it best.  I think you should do it though – they are lovely!

Like you it will come down to budget! Thanks so much for being here Shannon and sharing your kitchen renovation with us!

I really love Shannons kitchen – particularly the tiles, tap and bench tops. What is your favourite part? Have you used a matte black sink or tap?
