The one thing you don’t want to forget about starting preschool..

That one time I forgot about his first day of preschool | Our Urban Box

..and that would kinda be the actual first day! You know, that momentous occasion when you send them off, in many cases for the very first time, into someone else’s care. It is a photo worthy opportunity. A moment to capture and stick in the memory box. You don’t want to forget it.

It’s a big deal.

I mean what kind of mum would forget the very first day of preschool?  She must be awful! Lazy! Selfish even!! Or not. Maybe she was just a regular mum, doing her thing, thinking she had all her shiz together.

A mum that was me!!

Yep, thats right ladies! I forgot Mr 5’s very first day of 3 year old preschool. For interstate readers, in NSW children have the option of attending Preschool at 3 and/or 4, before starting their first year of big school which we call kindergarten.

We had bought a new bag and lunchbox, had been super busy getting him toilet trained and teaching him how to unwrap his lunch and snacks. We were good to go.  We were pumped. It was exciting! And then….

I still remember the day as if it happened yesterday.

As usual on a Friday I would take the kids up to visit my bestie for a play. The kids were all playing nicely and we were sitting chatting and scrolling through Facebook and Instagram. I clearly remember saying to her “oh look at all the kids on their first day of preschool. So cute”. Yeah, because their mums didn’t forget. Their mums were clearly on top of when preschool actually started!!

Then it hit me. He was actually meant to be starting preschool today. And I had forgot.

“Um, Chloe. Do you think Mr 5 was meant to start today as well?”

“Oh god, what if he was?” Then she laughed. Thanks hun!!

Oh crap. So I phoned preschool and the director answered.

“Oh hi Mrs C. Its Fleur H here”

“Fleur!!! Where are you love? Still on holidays?”

“Um no. Did Preschool start today”

“Yes, yes love we are all here. Where is Mr 5?”

“Oh he is here with me. I kinda forgot that it started today. I thought it was next week”.

And then she laughed as well “Not to worry, we will see him next week then”.

I felt terrible! What kind of mother forgets her child’s very first day of preschool?? Seriously! Who does that? The photo opportunity was gone. I will always look at the photo I took the following week and think “well, his actual first day was meant to be the week before but I forgot”. Its funny now and I crack up telling the story. I remember everyone laughing with me when I told them, my Facebook feed was full of comments such as “oh this is the funniest thing ever”, “lol, I love that you forgot, keeping it real!”

But wait it gets worse…. Miss 3 is starting preschool this year. I was all ready to take her on 30th January. But yep, you guessed it. She starts next week!! If one of the preschool teacher hadn’t come into work this week, I would have forgotten her first day as well. Yeah, pass me the mother of the year award… or a calendar. I could probably do with one of those.

Have you ever forgotten something important? Something photo worthy for their memory box? Confess and make me feel better!

Fleur x

Hahahahahaaa….. This is ace! Perhaps you can tell him you were just so sad to say goodbye that you kept him home for one last day with mummy? Of course, that would be adding lies on top of the neglect which would probably make you an even worse mother…. 😉

Funny! I kind of forgot Ari starting day care last week and was organising my parents to have him so I could go to a Dr’s appointment in peace. My Mum was the one to say “Ahh, doesn’t he start day care?”. Oh yeah!!
Not quite there, but hope it makes you feel a little better! LOL

I had a close encounter with my 5yr old last year starting Prep. I was out with my munchkin and on Facebook saw my friends/mother’s group posting first day of prep photos. Panicked that I had missed the first day of Prep, drove home, got munchkin dressed to find out our school started the next day! Being a mum is exhausting, I think many mums have been where you are! Probably won’t be the last either lol! Chantal, Seek Dare Love

Almost the exact same situation Chantal! Luckily you didn’t miss it. There is so much to remember as a mum. I fear this year is going to be worse with Mr 5 starting big school. Baby brain just doesn’t disappear with the birth of a child. I think it actually get worse! Thanks for stopping by x
