KITCHEN INSPO – OPEN SHELVING
I am a HUGE fan of kitchens with open shelving. HUGE! I am currently working on my kitchen design for the new house and both ideas feature open shelving in some way or another. I think by choosing a long single shelf (in place of over heads) is a great way to give your kitchen some personality by giving you space to show off your home decor pieces. Think cute bowls, mugs, art and of course a plant or 2, and you’re kitchen will reflect your style and quirks.
In the case of my kitchen, I think a long shelf on the end wall will open up the space. My kitchen, dining and living area is a rectangular area 4.7m wide and 11m long along the rear of the house to take in the view. So it isn’t a lot of room, well it is, but I am worried that having to fit three areas into that one space might be a bit squashy. My idea is that by removing the overheads cupboards, the kitchen will feel more spacious which will result in that whole space feeling more spacious.
I don’t have to worry about losing the storage that over head cupboards provide. I have a large walk in pantry and 15 drawers and 3 cupboards in the kitchen. So storage isn’t going to be a problem. So if I can loose the over heads and do something a little different, why not?
This photo above is what I am thinking. A long shelf against the back wall. Except I will have a range hood in the middle. It will be boxed in though so you won’t be able to see it. Like the photo below.
A lot of people are telling me not too because of the dust. I just think the shelf is above eye level so I won’t see the dust technically and whats one other surface to wipe over every now and then?
I will keep you posted on my kitchen design when I get the drawings back.
Are you a fan of open shelving? Do you have open shelves?
