I am a HUGE fan of kitchens with open shelving. HUGE! I am currently working on my kitchen design for the new house and both ideas feature open shelving in some way or another. I think by choosing a long single shelf (in place of over heads) is a great way to give your kitchen some personality by giving you space to show off your home decor pieces. Think cute bowls, mugs, art and of course a plant or 2, and you’re kitchen will reflect your style and quirks.

In the case of my kitchen, I think a long shelf on the end wall will open up the space. My kitchen, dining and living area is a rectangular area 4.7m wide and 11m long along the rear of the house to take in the view. So it isn’t a lot of room, well it is, but I am worried that having to fit three areas into that one space might be a bit squashy. My idea is that by removing the overheads cupboards, the kitchen will feel more spacious which will result in that whole space feeling more spacious.

I don’t have to worry about losing the storage that over head cupboards provide. I have a large walk in pantry and 15 drawers and 3 cupboards in the kitchen. So storage isn’t going to be a problem. So if I can loose the over heads and do something a little different, why not? nordic-bliss-scandinavian-style-minimalistic-white-danish-design-home-interior-kitchen

This photo above is what I am thinking. A long shelf against the back wall. Except I will have a range hood in the middle. It will be boxed in though so you won’t be able to see it. Like the photo below.

A lot of people are telling me not too because of the dust. I just think the shelf is above eye level so I won’t see the dust technically and whats one other surface to wipe over every now and then?

I will keep you posted on my kitchen design when I get the drawings back.

Are you a fan of open shelving? Do you have open shelves?

Normally I would say I am not a fan of open shelves – but you have changed my mind. I LOVE the first picture, this is something I have never seen done before with open shelves and I adore the simplicity and effect. I just think of the extra dusting and cleaning open shelves are and if its not all matchy-matchy then it can look a little messy. In a stylist’s home yes! They look aaaamazing!

I am a fan of open shelving (although not for my hamptons-esque kitchen) but definitely in the style of kitchen in those gorgeous pics! I agree if it’s above eye level, a quick whipover every now and then would be fine…. and the decorating options…. 🙂

I like the look of open shelving but I’m way too messy for it….Ha! That would be a good photographic exercise….

These are all lovely kitchens. We have to renovate our kitchen soon and I think the open shelving is a great idea, it’s on my list!

I’m not very neat – so I worry about open shelving. But maybe the simple minimalism of it all would aid me in keeping neat?

I really like some open shelving in kitchens to display items. The first kitchen looks great. 🙂

I have had open shelves and I am not a huge fan. I love the look and these pics are beautiful but for practicality wise… I am not the cleanest person around.

[…] guess the reason I love open shelves so much is that it is a bit different to every other kitchen you see. I like different! Something […]
