Why I love being a school mum // Our Urban Box

So we did it! We made it through our first term of school. It is done and dusted and today is the first day of school holidays, if your in NSW. I loved our first term of school, every bit of it. No thats a lie, having to make lunches everyday bothers me, every day the same lunch is packed. I wish I could mix it up a little but I can’t. The bloody kid is so damn fussy!

The joy and pride I felt on his first day of school continued through out the term with each new thing he learnt. Watching him blossom and grow up so much over the past 10 weeks has been an absolute joy. I could never have imagined how much he would grow up in these past 10 weeks. Never. He became a school boy and with that came the realisation that he wasn’t my baby anymore. I was setting him free. Just the things he comes home and tells us, or if I am doing something for him, he now says “I can do it mum, I can do it”. I’ve had to really let him do more on his own now. And he can. I just wasn’t ready to let him before. But now he is at school, I can’t hold him back.

There are so many reasons why I love being a school mum:

➕ THE CUTENESS – There is so much cuteness involved with the kindergarten kids. From their little love stories to singing their little songs in Mass. Its all of the cuteness, but on a different level. Some of it was almost too much to bear.

Why I love being a school mum // our urban box

➕ HIS TEACHER – Mrs G – I love her! She is so wonderful with the kids and Mr 5 adores her. You can tell she just loves her job and her kids. I love her even more when I saw her at the food and wine festival. The next school day she asked how it went and I confessed that I didn’t remember getting home and being all kinds of shady the next day and she laughed and said “Same! Gosh I was sick”. Sounds like my kind of gal.

➕ THE OTHER MUMS – The other mums in the class are all so lovely and friendly. It has been really great to form friendships with them. We are all in the same boat, this being our first child off to school and we are always asking each other about things we aren’t sure on. Bring on the Kinder Mums Big Night Out next month!

➕ THE SCHOOL COMMUNITY – You really feel the sense of school community in everything the school does. The school just held its major fundraising event of the year, the fete, and I couldn’t believe how good it was. I am sure the whole school turned up to support it. It was such a great night. I love the sense of belonging they are teaching at the school too through religion and other programs they carry out.

➕ SCHOOL PICK UP – I am able to pick Mr 5 up from school 3 days a week and it is my favourite time of the day. I love hearing about what has happened, who has been naughty, who is who’s girlfriend today (kinder love stories are ever so complicated!). Seeing his smile at the end of the day makes my heart melt.

➕ SCHOOL UNIFORMS AND BIG BAGS – I love seeing him in his school uniform with his big bulky bag that is too big for me. Again, its the cuteness – its all too much!

➕WATCHING MR 5 BLOOM – This has to be the best bit. He has taken to school like duck to water and my heart swells with pride all of the time watching him learn and grow.

I can’t wait for term 2. But first lets get through these holidays peacefully and without fights!

How was term 1 for you? If your a first time school mum like me, tell me what you are loving about being a school mum.

Great wrap from a very proud mumma. Glad to hear he’s going so well. You’ve captured pretty much everything I’m feeling too. Just cannot believe how quickly it’s all happening. The reading, the way she speaks, the little friendships shes making and nurturing all by herself and the things she now does by herself. The other day she came home and said “Mummy did you know Zayne has left one direction”. WTF… I didn’t know she even knew who 1D were! 😉

It’s been a long time since I was a first time school mum with a 17 and almost 20 year old. I miss the afternoon teas. I would bake every day and we would sit at the table with smoothies or a milo and baked goodies and chat for half an hour before homework time x

Aww thats so cute Lisa. Its so wonderful watching them with their new friends! Mr 5 is still a little hesitant in the mornings but we saw so much improvement the last week of school where we were able to leave him before the bell goes. I think he still finds the playground a bit overwhelming even when he has his friends close by. Lets hope term 2 goes just as well.

I’m so pleased that he’s settled so well and loving it so much – you have every reason to be proud! When I was teaching, that was my favourite age group, because they just come on in leaps and bounds and learn new things every day. Happy days!

I used to like school as a kid but I LOVE it as a mum 🙂 We are still in week 10 here in the ACT but next week I will be surfing the school holidays too. I am feeling a little nervous to be honest. The school holidays are FULL ON. Full on fun, Full on messy. Full on loud. Full on expensive! xo

I love the routine that comes with being a school mum. My kids are super involved with all the after school activities, so we are really busy, and I really enjoy that. I must admit, I am a fan of the break during the holidays too though. xx
