So today I am stepping away from homewares and fab finds because I need to talk.

I need to talk about Making a Murderer (MAM)- the hit documentary series from Netflix. Have you seen it? If not, I highly recommend watching it. You won’t be sorry. It is the most compelling, emotional, manipulative and obsessive TV show I have ever watched. Then you can come back here and talk to me about it because you too will be obsessed with it.

If you haven’t watched it, MAM tells the story of Steven Avery. A man who spent 18 years in jail for a rape and attempted murder that he didn’t commit. Throughout his time in jail he maintained his innocence. He was finally exonerated when DNA tests revealed he wasn’t the person who committed the crime.

He then set about living a good, peaceful life. Staying out of trouble until Teresa Halbach went missing. Steven was the last person to see her alive (or so the police say!) after she visited his property to take photos for a car trade magazine. The documentary details how  the Manitowoc police department set Steven up and framed him for the murder. It is believed the police department placed evidence in and around Stevens trailer and family owned car yard to frame him.

I know the show is biased, and there was a lot of information and evidence not shown due to not enough time, but what was shown was enough to make the world rally behind Steven and believe in his innocence. For Gods sake, blind Freddy can see he didn’t do it.

The Manitowoc Police Department were told to leave the case to a neighbouring sheriff department yet they kept showing up. ‘Finding’ evidence after numerous other searches by other Police Departments that revealed nothing. Yet when Manitowoc Policeman enter and search the premises suddenly they ‘find’ evidence which was supposedly in clear sight. The key ‘found’ in Stevens bedroom only showed Stevens DNA. Well of course it will show Stevens DNA – its in his room, it has been contaminated just by being there. That alone in this day and age would be enough to not be able to enter that key as evidence.  But if that key belong to Teresa’s RAV4 like the Manitowoc Sheriff Deparment said then why the heck wasn’t her DNA on it??

And then they found a bullet casing in Stevens garage months later after the initial search?? And you guessed it – the Manitowoc Police Department found it.

Nothing adds up. Steven again is maintaining his innocence. His blood was planted in her car, her car planted on his property, her bones were found in 3 different locations, voicemail msg’s deleted from her voicemail, she was receiving weird phone calls from a previously convicted sex offender and these weren’t investigated?? Why the hell not? Why wasn’t her brother, room mate and boyfriend investigated further? Why wasn’t any of Teresa’s DNA in Stevens bedroom or garage if thats supposedly where he killed her?

The Manitowoc Sheriff Department wanted Steven behind bars. Stevens case to sue those who framed him 18 years ago was coming to a end and it was looking like the Sheriff Department wasn’t going to be liable for the $36M payout and that was going to fall on the officers themselves. And their insurance companies weren’t going to pay up. So hey, why not just frame him again and put him behind bars so we aren’t personally liable. And thats exactly what they have done!!

Oh god, and don’t get me started on the treatment of poor 16yr old Brendan Dassey who was forced into giving a statement about his and Steven’s supposed involvement. How those videos and statements were allowed to presented to the court as evidence is beyond me. Brendan was a 16yr old school student, who is quite simple, shy, introverted and IQ that is way below average. The poor guy had no idea what he was being asked, how to answer or what to do. AND he is alone with no parent or lawyer present???

I really could go on. But I won’t. I have so much to say and I could ramble on all day! One thing I noticed through out the show was Stevens demeanour and the way he kept himself composed. Not once did he yell or scream in court, the voice recordings show he is still maintaining his innocence and states the truth will come out. He is always calm. He doesn’t sound like a killer to me. Steven himself is simple man too, but you can hear it in his voice – he just didn’t do it and he will continue to fight for his innocence. Surely if he did, he would just admit to it after all these years? Succumb to the verdict and try to make amends?

I have my theory on who did it. I think it was the other Dassey guy and his mate/cousin. The ones who said they were going hunting. They did it. The police found the RAV4 and took the opportunity to frame Steven so they didn’t have to pay.  I’ve joined all the Facebook groups, I am following his new lawyer, Kathleen Zellner on twitter and man, that woman is a force! She will free him. I am sure of that. I can’t wait for that courtroom showdown!

Bring on Season 2!

Are you watching? I’d love to hear your thoughts on who did it! Lets chat below –

I actually think he may have done it. I did more research into everything after I watched the show because I’m always a little suspicious of documentaries when they’re so sensationalised. He definitely didn’t live the good, peaceful life that a lot of people make out to be. Now, do I think he planned to kill Teresa? No. I think he tried to crack onto her, and then snapped when she rebuffed him. That being said, do I trust everything that the Manitowoc Sherriff Department did? Also no. There are particular things that members of that police force did that I really can’t wrap my head around. I don’t necessarily believe that they planted his blood in the car, either, but I think further techniques need to be developed to determine a definitive answer. Did Avery get a fair trial? I’m not 100% sure about that either. I thought it was kind of rubbish how the defence weren’t able to try to appropriate blame elsewhere.

As for Brendan Dassey, I feel sorry for him. His confession did sound coerced to me, like he was just trying to tell people what he thought they wanted to hear. I can’t make up my mind as to whether or not he did anything, but even if he did, I don’t think he deserved the sentence that he was given. I thought it was waaaaay too harsh.

Loads of podcasts have covered the documentary, and I’ve got them lined up on my To Listen list! I know that True Murder did an episode a couple of months back, as did Generation Why, and Real Crime Profile did half a dozen or so as well. I’m really interested in listening to what Real Crime Profile has to say, because one of the hosts is apparently a casting director for a crime show, so I’m kinda like…. “Whaaaat?”

Your the only person I know who thinks he has done it! I did read something the other day that made me question his innocence, but I can’t quite remember now what it was. The truth will come out eventually I suppose. I will have to go listen to those podcasts – thanks for the tips!
