Dream Kitchen in Pictures

I just can not wait to get my dream kitchen ideas out of my head and into a real life design. This for me will the most fun part of building our home! I thought I would share some of my  dream kitchen inspiration pictures with you.

Lets talk splash backs! I want tiles. Everyone tells me to go with a glass splash back. I really would have loved a window splash back but that would mean our neighbours would be able to see right in! Can’t have that. So I have narrowed it down to these two choices. Well three actually but I couldn’t find a photo of the other one online. But it is a hexagonal shape tile. I love love love subway tiles! I think they would be easier to keep clean in the kitchen rather than a bathroom. And the added bonus is that they are well within budget! The other tiles I am looking at are more than double the builders budget but… there is only a small amount needed so we have decided that if we want to splurge on them, we will. I prefer tiles because they add a element of texture to the kitchen and in my opinion are more warm and inviting. Glass just seems so cold, but a lot of people love it, it just isn’t me.

Open Shelving

Open shelving – you either love it or hate it. I’m in the love love love it group! Yes I know it will get dusty and that, but it isn’t hard to wipe it down while your waiting for dinner to cook. I think it can add a whole new life to your kitchen. I just think it is so inviting. I am thinking a combination of over head cupboards and open shelving. Compromising with the hubby as he wants cupboards. I love how in pic 1 they have put open shelving above the over head cupboards. You would surely need a ladder to get up there though!

If you asked me right now what my dream kitchen would look like, I would say – white, airy, a bit Scandinavian, a bit of timber, maybe marble benches, no handles, lots of drawers – thats how I want my dream kitchen to look. Of all three pictures my favourite is number 2. Its featured on the cover of this months Inside Out Magazine and as soon as I saw it I thought thats the one! I love the mix of white cupboards, slightly grey benches, with timber shelving featured. And the drawers. I love the drawers. This is the picture I will take to the kitchen place and tell them “I want this”. I am undecided on exact colours and finishes just yet. But will be sure to let you know!

I picture my kitchen being accessorised with pops of soft muted colours, definitely a few plants and a print or two. That will be the fun part once we move in.

I’d love to know your thoughts and opinions on open shelving in kitchens. In the love it or hate it group?

I don’t hate open shelving. Infact I like it…. I’m other people’s homes. I just don’t know what I’d display up there as I wouldn’t want my plates etc up there. I was ment to have open shelving above my fridge in kitchen but let hubby win and we added cupboards.
I’m actually short and can’t even reach those cupboards anyways so hubby uses them for his snack food etc

Love the hexagonal tiles but bet your tiler won’t love you! I think the plain subway seems to be a bit too popular for my taste. Love LOVE the open shelving options for Number 1. I have friends who had open shelving near their stove and while it looks awesome she deeply regrets it. Being close to the stove the shelves get a thicker, grimier coating on them that is foul, not just like cleaning normal dusty shelves so just a thought (and she has a powerful rangehood).

Love art in the kitchen too

I agree re – the subway tiles. They are so popular but I love them. Maybe I’ll just put them in my laundry? I actually hadn’t thought about the shelves getting dirtier near the stove. That makes me think a combination of shelves and cupboards is the way to go!

I love open shelving but mine always end up looking cluttered. I love #2 you have above in the open shelving pics! How exciting planning a dream kitchen! Enjoy!

I personally prefer closed shelves but maybe one open shelf. I have one small one at the moment with cool jars holding pasta and rice etc, which does act as decoration! But I prefer most of it hidden away.
I love how light and bright your dream kitchen is – very fresh. I too like a pop of colour – like yellow or blue 🙂

My husband agrees with you. He wants it all hidden away. Oh I love yellow! Haven’t decided on which colours I will use yet. Maybe softer colurs ? Not sure.

I really like the look of open shelving. It makes the kitchen feel so much lighter and friendlier without heavy cupboards hanging above your head. As long as you have pretty things to display then I don’t see it as a problem aesthetically. Dusting them would be a pain though especially in my house as it is a very dusty area I live in.

I agree with the lighter and friendlier look Nat. I think the mix of cupboards and shelving are a much warmer and inviting look. I plan to have lots of pretty things. I hear you on the dust! It’s never ending. How are your reno’s going?

Oh man I am drooling here, which is not a pretty site. I would love open shelving, although the dusting part doesnt appeal to me. I have so many different styles of kitchens that I love, I would be hard pressed to choose just one if I had to do a redesign x

I am the same Sonia, so many styles but I have narrowed down to something similar to what I have posted above. It is a really hard decision to make. Yeah the dusting part will suck but I think I can handle it. The bonus is no one will see the dust on the higher shelves anyhow!
