Fun Family Activities to do in Wagga | Our Urban Box

Did you know that Wagga Wagga was recently named the most family friendly city in all of Australia? Yep! How awesome is that? And I can see why Wagga won the title; it really is a great place to live! And not only that, the Riverina area (of which Wagga is the main centre) was declared as one of the happiest areas in Australia 2011. So why wouldn’t you want to come and visit or perhaps even move to the happiest and most family friendly place in Australia? This corner of the world has so much to offer to residents and visitors alike. So much to see and do, fun family activities; you could do a road trip every weekend to go exploring!

I’d love you to come visit me in Wagga. If you did, we would go for a ride on a miniature railway, go for a bike ride around Lake Albert and we would take a trip to Junee (20 min car ride) to visit the Junee Liquorice and Chocolate Factory and make our own chocolate freckles. 3 of our family friendly activities we regularly do on weekends.

The Wagga Wagga miniature railway is located in the heart of The Botanic Gardens. The miniature railway weaves through the gardens, woodlands, tunnels and over a bridge. Everything is authentic; you purchase tickets from the ticket office, wait for your ride at the Station, complete with signs and benches and listen to the the instructions of the station master. The railway is complete with working lights, stop signs and whistles.

It operates on the 1st and 3rd Sunday of every month and costs $2 per person per ride. Closed in shoes are a must!

TIP – After riding the train, take some time to wander through the gardens and take a visit to the Zoo. You can buy pellets to feed the animals from the kiosk near the Zoo entry.

Lake Albert is in the heart of Lake Albert, Wagga, funny that! Lake Albert offers many recreations both on and off the water. One of our favourite things to do as a family is to walk or ride around the lake and feed the ducks. The 5.5km track is covered in road base so that the walk or ride is smooth. On the walk/ride you can stop at one of 3 parks for a play on the swings, use one of the many fitness equipment stations located around the track and call into the boat club for a drink or something to eat. The lake is full of natural birdlife and a great little fishing spot as well for the kids. The track is very popular and most people love to wave and say hi as we pass each other.

It is a perfect way to get the kids active riding their bikes and spend some quality time as a family. Don’t forget to take the dog too! There is a off leash area where your dog can run around a agility course.

TIP – End the walk/ride with some fish and chips by the water. A takeaway store is located near Apex Park, on Main St, Lake Albert. Perfect during the warmer months.

This is a must see on any trip to Wagga Wagga. Junee is a 20 min drive and the liquorice factory is a famous tourist attraction. You will get the best ever hot chocolate at the factory – the best!! Its rich, smooth, creamy and made with the chocolate they make on site. For $4 you can make your own ginormous chocolate freckle or for $8 you can make rocky road. While that sets, enjoy some cake and tea in the cafe or a lunch in the adjoining restaurant.

Take a tour of the factory, look around the gift shop and of course buy some delicious chocolate treats that are all made on site.

TIP – get there early on weekends. It gets very busy quickly! Every Sunday they have a musician softly singing in the cafe. And with the fire roaring, its the perfect place for a Sunday Brunch in the middle of winter.

Have you been to Wagga? What is your favourite thing to do with your family?

I lived in Wagga for a couple of years about 10 years ago. My twin boys were born there and my daughter started school there. We loved it. We spent so much time at the botanical gardens and walking through the zoo. A great place to visit and live!
